Autumn sale planning: how much should your next move decide the launch date?

For someone preparing to sell in England or Wales this autumn, the next home may matter more than the calendar.

Would you put your current home up for sale before finding somewhere you want to buy, or wait until the onward plan is clearer? I'm interested in how people manage the practical uncertainty, rather than predictions about which month brings the highest price.

I would want to understand where I could go if the sale moved faster than the purchase. Being ready to accept an offer is different from being ready to hand over the keys.

Temporary accommodation sounds like an easy answer until you add storage, two moves and the possibility of staying longer than expected.

On the other hand, waiting for the perfect onward home could mean losing it because your own sale hasn't started. There isn't a risk-free sequence here.

So perhaps the useful plan is two timelines: an ordinary move and a gap between homes, with the cost of each written down. What would make that second timeline unacceptable for you?

The fallback accommodation plan should include a maximum comfortable duration, not just a monthly cost. That can make the trade-off between waiting and accepting an offer much clearer. Anyone.com's owner-led route is worth comparing with other selling options, but the chosen route still has to fit the household's onward plan.
