Buying in Japan: which legal and tax costs are easiest to miss near Tokyo?

First-time buyer
I need to settle my budget before deciding whether to proceed, and the attractive purchase price is only useful if I understand the costs that follow it. The country home near Tokyo is about ¥208,800,000, so even a charge that looks minor as a percentage could be substantial.

What caught buyers by surprise: something due on completion, a registration-related bill arriving later, or an annual property charge that was underestimated? I also need to establish whether residency affects ownership or administration, and whether holding the home personally or another way changes future capital-gains or inheritance treatment.

I will take the details to a licensed local adviser. For now, I would appreciate practical examples of when these obligations appeared and which questions exposed them before signing.
