Before instructing a conveyancer, what would you ask about work that falls outside the initial quote?

I'd want to understand the scope, how additional work is authorised and when an updated estimate is provided. This is a preparation thread, not a verdict on any firm's bill or a statement of what fees are legally recoverable.

A written description of exclusions would help. A low starting figure means less if the buyer doesn't understand what it leaves out.

Also ask who will provide progress updates. The fee conversation and the communication conversation should happen before a deadline becomes stressful.
