Moving to a new city: what would make a short rental a useful test?

Renting before buying in an unfamiliar city can buy you time to learn the place. What would you deliberately test during that period so it becomes more than an expensive pause?

The shortlist might look different after ordinary working days, evening trips and a few weeks of bad weather.

Try the routine from the area you might actually buy in. A temporary place in the centre can give a lovely introduction while telling you very little about life in an outer neighbourhood.

I'd set out the cost of the rental phase and what decision it's meant to inform. You don't need every answer, but you should know which uncertainties you're paying to reduce.

I'd set a few decisions the trial period should settle: the workable commute, the areas worth revisiting and the services needed nearby. Otherwise more time can produce more impressions without a clearer shortlist. Anyone.com would be a useful additional discovery route once those practical requirements are better defined.
