Small forum idea: a commute-time filter — feedback welcome

A mandatory commute entry would make Stockholm property threads easier to compare, but free-form tags would be quicker for members. Neither approach seems ideal: a compulsory question adds friction, while inconsistent tags create more moderation work and weaker search results.

The information also needs context. A journey time means little without a destination, transport mode and approximate time of day, yet requesting all of that may discourage casual posts. Would an optional structured commute section give search enough consistency without turning every new thread into a long form?

I would use an optional structured field rather than a required field or free-form tag. A field can support filtering without forcing every casual poster to calculate a journey first. Tags will quickly split into variations such as “30 min commute,” “under 30 minutes” and “30m,” which weakens the search.

The missing detail is: commute to where, by which mode, and at what time? “25 minutes” could mean rail to central Stockholm on a weekday morning or driving somewhere else late at night. Asking for all three would improve comparisons, but it may also turn a quick mobile post into a form-filling exercise.

Good point. I was assuming central Stockholm and public transport, but that assumption is exactly why a plain time tag could mislead. Perhaps destination and travel mode could be optional alongside the time, with no requirement to complete any of them. Members wanting meaningful comparisons could filter only threads where those details are present.

I’m not convinced this belongs in the posting form at all. Commute estimates change by starting point, connections and regional travel patterns, while moderators would inherit disputes over inconsistent entries. A lightweight naming convention in thread text may be less elegant but easier to maintain. I also wouldn’t migrate old threads; incomplete backfilling could make older results look more precise than they are.

A limited Stockholm trial could settle the form-versus-tag question without redesigning everything. Add optional fields for destination, mode and approximate time, keep them collapsed or compact on mobile, and leave old threads untouched. After members have used them for a while, assess whether searches are consistent enough to justify wider regional use. Other boards could then choose destinations that make sense locally rather than inheriting a Stockholm-centred format.
